Enrichment Programs
Tsukuba International School offers various after-school enrichment programs to our students. These programs are designed to enhance the student’s knowledge, abilities, and understanding of particular fields. Some programs are offered on a month-to-month basis, while others extend throughout the full-year.
Art Enrichment – Modelling and Sculpture
Instructor: Jodie Gilbert
Purpose: To learn basic modelling techniques to create items such as an animal key ring out of polymer clay!
English Writing Enrichment Program
Instructor: Mike Chartier
Purpose: The purpose is to give students the opportunity to express themselves in writing. Genres that students can choose from include descriptive essays/paragraphs, fantasy stories, and poetry. Students will work on individual writing projects, and the writing process will consist of brainstorming, writing a rough draft, revising, editing, and producing a final draft. At the end of May, writing that is ready for publication will be shared with the TIS community. Students are expected to do some writing at home as well.
Japanese Language Enrichment Program
Purpose: To give students the opportunity to express themselves more formally in Japanese (e.g. using more academic-level language) both orally and in writing. Exercises will be tailored to the students’ age and Japanese level.
Musical Theatre
Director: Junji Ohtaki
Purpose: This program is designed to let students experience the process of putting together a musical theatre performance. It involves practices on 10 Thursdays between January and March and ends in a mini-musical (in English) involving all of the students who are enrolled in the program.
Recorder Enrichment Program
Instructor: Youichi Henbo
Purpose: To give advanced students the opportunity to practice their recorder technique and further explore their skills at interpreting music with their instrument.
Spanish Enrichment Program
Instructor: Misato Hasegawa
Purpose:To give students the opportunity to learn some easy beginner Spanish language and about Latin American culture
Sports and Play Program
Instructor: Yunosuke Handa
Purpose: Students who participate in this program will get a chance to play games and get some outdoor exercise with Mr. Handa before going indoors (when it gets dark) to work on their homework.
Violin Enrichment Program
Instructor: Craig Coleman
Purpose: To give advanced students the opportunity to practice their violin technique and further explore their skills at interpreting music with their instrument.

Applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until we reach the stated limit for the program. Students may apply to join more than one program as long as they do not conflict.
Please note: These programs are only available to current students of Tsukuba International School. They are not available to non-students.
