From the Scholastic website:

Pam Muñoz Ryan has written over 25 children’s books. Each of her celebrated novels tells the story of a strong character in a specific time and place. Esperanza Rising is about a young girl who flees from Mexico to California to work in a labor camp. Riding Freedom is an account of little-known heroine Charlotte Parkhurst, a girl in the 1800s who is determined to become a horse rider but faces obstacles because she is female. Muñoz Ryan’s newest book, Becoming Naomi León, focuses on a girl whose mother reappears after a 7-year absence.

Who will be the first TIS student to read these new books?

This book is about two girls, Wanda and Araminta, who need to find a present for Sir Horace’s five hundredth birthday. They found what they want to give him, but a portcullis trapped them. This story took place in a cave and a haunted house. The eight characters in the house include ghosts and wizards. My favorite character is Edmund, who is a ghost. I like him because he is brave and helpful. Funny things happened like Uncle Drac falling out of his bedroom. I recommend this book because it is funny and gives many details. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this book an 8.

The author is Angie Sage. The story is about Wanda and Araminta finding a sword for Sir Horace’s birthday. Wanda is interesting because she is crazy! Uncle Drac is Araminta’s Uncle. The funniest part of the story is when Uncle Drac fell out of his sleeping bag and squished his friend Big Bat. I liked the character Sir Horace because he is a ghost and a knight. I would recommend this book because it has a lot of details and a good ending. I would give this book a score of 10 out of 10.

Tsukuba International School is a member of Scholastic, a mail order club that is very popular with schools in North America. It is the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and a leader in educational technology and children’s media. While its primary focus is children’s books, it also offers magazines, technology-based products, teacher materials, television programming, film, videos, and toys.

Students at our school are given the opportunity of ordering books from Scholastic on a regular basis. Our September order recently came in and the kids were SO excited to receive not just their own books, but some extra books for our school library.

Here is a scene from our morning meeting. One of our students is sharing a new book with her schoolmates.

And here are some of the new books that we have added to our school library.

It is great to see the kids so excited about books!

If you are interested in learning more about our school library, please have a look at the Library page on our website where you can see a random sampling of our collection and even search for books online. We only have a very small portion of our books online right now, but we will keep working on getting our full collection online over the school year.
