In September 2010, Tsukuba International School will be launching its junior high school programme, starting with a Grade 7/8 class for the first year and eventually offering up to Grade 10. In the spring we planted rice, and this fall we returned to the rice fields to harvest it. After we practiced harvesting rice the old-fashioned way, we watched local farmers do it the modern way. Finally, we ate the farmers’ handmade onigiri (rice balls), which tasted much better than those store-bought ones.
In a lot close to the current school location, we are constructing a new school building. The new building will be 1085 m2 in size and will be made of Finnish wood in line with our belief in providing a natural and healthy learning space for our students. The new school will have ten classrooms….

We dug up some bamboo shoots. One student dug up a giant bamboo shoot. I thought it was easy to dig up the bamboo shoots. Our friends made us a picnic with food made from takenoko. I hope I can go to the takenoko forest again.
