Tsukuba International School’s guiding statements align with several principles and articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), emphasizing the importance of equality, non-discrimination, diversity, education, and the wellbeing of children.
Here are some examples of how our guiding statements align with the CRC.
Mission Statement
“Celebrating diversity, equality, and opportunity” aligns with CRC Article 2, which emphasizes the right of every child to be treated without discrimination, regardless of their or their parents’ characteristics.
The school’s focus on being a “compassionate learning community” promotes the principles of CRC Article 3, which underscores the best interests of the child as a primary consideration.
Pledge of Non-Discrimination
The explicit commitment to not discriminate based on factors such as “race, color, gender, nationality, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression” is in direct accordance with CRC Article 2, which stipulates that children should not be subject to discrimination of any kind.
This pledge also aligns with CRC Article 2’s call for states to take all appropriate measures to ensure that children are protected from discrimination.
Definition of International-Mindedness
The school’s definition promotes CRC Article 2, as it encourages “understanding, accepting, and celebrating human diversity” and fostering a sense of identity while respecting others, in line with the principle that every child has the right to develop their personality, abilities, and potential (CRC Article 6).
The emphasis on “communicating with empathy and compassion” aligns with CRC Article 12, which emphasizes that children have the right to freely express their views and be heard in matters affecting them.
Definition of Wellbeing
Prioritizing “wellbeing through healthy choices” aligns with CRC Article 24, which recognizes the right of the child to the highest attainable standard of health, and CRC Article 6, which emphasizes the child’s right to life and development.
“Setting personal, academic, and professional goals and boundaries” aligns with CRC Article 29, which highlights the importance of developing the child’s personality, talents, and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential.
School-Wide Learning Objectives
The objective “to be critical thinkers in order to foster peace and understanding” resonates with CRC Article 28, which emphasizes the right to education that promotes the development of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“To become ethical stewards of our shared resources” aligns with CRC Article 29, which encourages education that promotes respect for the environment and the child’s responsibility as a member of society.
Tsukuba International School’s guiding statements consistently uphold the principles and rights outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These statements reflect a commitment to providing an inclusive, equitable, and supportive educational environment that empowers students to grow, learn, and contribute positively to their community and the world, in accordance with the CRC’s guiding principles.
